Remote distance sampling workshops.

Consistent with social distancing and travel restrictions, we will be offering our distance sampling training workshops remotely.

Distance Live Online Workshop

12th – 23rd April 2021 15:00-17:30 GMT

If you wish to use distance sampling to conduct wildlife population assessment, there are two forms of training you can receive.  Method one is to watch lectures and exercises at our online website.  Method two is to spend 2.5 hours per day for two weeks participating in a lively interactive online session.  In the interactive session, you will engage with an instructor and other workshop participants discussing lecture material regarding fundamental issues of conventional distance sampling.  You will also carry out analyses of distance sampling data sets using R and discuss the challenges, findings and interpretation of those results with your fellow participants.

The interactive workshop is an entertaining way to learn the fundamentals of distance sampling and also appreciate the threats to the inferences that may arise during your study.

Spatially explicit models for distance sampling data: density surface modelling in practice

8 – 12th March 2021 16:00-18:00 GMT

***This workshop is now fully subscribed.***

This online course will cover how to fit spatial models to distance sampling data (“density surface modelling”) in R. This will include:

  • Brief overview of distance sampling
  • Generalized additive models
  • Fitting, checking and selecting density surface models
  • Predicting abundance
  • Making maps

Examples will be based around a line transect survey of sperm whales in the western Atlantic.

Practical design and simulation to optimise distance sampling surveys.

15th – 17th March 2021 15:30-17:00 GMT

***This workshop is now fully subscribed.***

Good survey design is critical for obtaining reliable results in distance sampling surveys and meeting survey objectives. This workshop expands on the basic theory provided in our introductory workshops to demonstrate how our latest software can be used to generate optimal survey designs while respecting budgetary and logistical constraints.
